Discovering the B-24 Liberator hangar in Werribee is like stepping back in time to the Roaring Forties.
The smell of welded metal, the hum of friendly chatter over clattering work tools, and the impressive sight of the huge silvery fuselage of the B-24 Liberator aircraft welcome curious visitors to this exciting local tourist attraction.
Housed in a heritage-listed hangar built in 1942, early in World War Two, this B-24 Liberator is the only one remaining in the Southern Hemisphere and one of only thirteen in the world. This is a unique and significant attraction, right here on our doorstep!
In addition to the Liberator, an Airspeed Oxford is being rebuilt and an Avro Anson restored. These are aircraft in which Liberator pilots trained. There is also a Boomerang because these aircraft flew from Werribee satellite airfield during World War Two. All these aircraft restoration projects are being carried out by volunteers.
The B-24 Liberator Memorial Australia is now an accredited museum. It also has a heritage collection of small items associated with Liberators, and some of these are on display. There is a gift shop next to the entrance.
The museum is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 9.30am to 3.30pm, and visitors are most welcome.
